Android Apps
ChompSMS – At first glance, chompSMS doesn’t seem to do much but gussy up the stock messaging app of Android and offer an alternative SMS plan. But there is more to it than that, as you’ll see below. Chomp bundles are way more expensive than most U.S. carrier plans. Not to mention that G1 owners get plenty of included texts with the cheapest data plan T-Mo offers for the handset. But as the program’s Market description points out, chompSMS does provide a good alternative for international messaging.
Locale – Locale is an app that let’s you take control of the settings of your phone based on specific conditions that you can choose from. Locale essentially automates all of the functions that you would normally have to switch manually after you configure it to fit your needs.

AnyCut/BetterCut – AnyCut is a small app that allows you to create shortcuts to, well, almost anything. It has a mysterious “Make Your Own” option that isn’t really documented at all. I started to play with it a bit, and it’s not as bad as you would think.

SnapPhoto – SnapPhoto for the G1 Android Phone is an application to use for your camera on your G1. Using the accelerometer you can detect stability, take photo and much more.
Useful Switcher – Quick toggle for frequently used system settings:
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- Ringer mode
- Battery level status
- Internal/sd card memory status
- Brightness adjustment
- Airplane Mode
- Screen Timeout
- Flashlight
- Auto Sync
- 2G/3G
- Wireless Location
- Silent Mode

The Weather Channel – The Weather Channel app for the Android platforum is easily the most comprehensive weather app available thus far. There are tons of features and plenty of information available for wherever you are and with GPS enabled on your phone, you can actually get really precise location based information as it’s happening.

Ringdroid – Create a ringtone from any song in your music library. Love it.

Picsay – PicSay will liven up the pictures on your mobile phone by enabling you to add text, graphics, effects, and more. Say what you want directly in the picture and then share it with your friends, family or the rest of the world via e-mail, your blog, or the popular photo sharing sites on the web.

Shopsavvy – Also featured onstage. Uses the camera as a bar-code scanner to let you compare prices while shopping in a store.

Shazam – Shazam is a music recognition app that’s really useful for helping you figure out information about a song you’re hearing. The app is very simple and easy to use as there’s only two options for you to select from when you load it. Those options are Tag Now and My Tags.

Sky Map - This is a Google phone exclusive app. If you like camping and the outdoors then this is a must have. Go out side and point your Google phone camera at the sky and it will show you what stars, constellations and planets you are gazing at. It has a full map of the sky so even if your visibility is a little it will still show you what you are looking at. Another great feature is search, type in a planet, constellation, or specific star name and it will help point you in the direction to where it is at until you find it. IT is a very simple application and doesn’t take much learning to figure it out, a must have!
