I get a lot of questions about Windows newest operating system - Windows 7. Most people want to know if it is worth their time and effort to upgrade from XP or Vista. After using the OS for several months now, I've decided to compile a short list of the best new features coming out of Redmond. Interface. My favorite change has been to the user interface on the desktop and throughout the operating system. Gone are the days of a long bar with text. The new taskbar, aka Superbar ditches text completely. You will now just have a large icon for any running program. You can drag icons to rearrange their order, whether the program they represent is running or not. When a program is running, the color changes slightly so you don't confuse it with your quicklaunch programs. You can also hover your mouse over any running program to see a thumbnail preview. Something I love about this is when I have several windows open of the same program (Firefox), it displays a thumbnail of each and I can choose which one I want to open. Interface. Microsoft is offering a free download of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) for the next little while. According to the site, it will expire on June 1, 2010. However, starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. The official retail copy should be available around October of this year, so you probably shouldn't be using it past then anyways. Note, while a release candidate is considered a more stable version than a "beta", this version still has minor bugs and issues. Personally, I get the dreaded "blue screen of death" every time I open a DVD in Windows Media Player. However, this should not prevent you from downloading it. Have you ever wanted to take a screen shot of something you are doing and couldn't because you don't know how? I always do, for various reasons like to e-mail people stuff that I am doing or just for fun because I have something cool on my computer. Well wait no longer because I figured out how to take a screen shot on your mac.  Hold down command(apple button) shift and 4 all at the same time, a small cross hair will now appear on your screen, select the area you would like to capture then let go of the mouse button and the picture will snap and save to your desktop, pretty easy. This will work for anything you would like to capture, so if you see something cool on the web you want to show someone, or want to snap the whole page. It may work in games but I have not tested it out yet, so go have fun with it.  For you PC users it is a little more work and I am not quite sure how well it works, but here is how you can do it. This morning it was announced that the four founders of the Pirate Bay website were all sentenced to one year in jail, and $905,000 each in fines for contributing to distribution of copyrighted material.  Peter Sunde one of the founders was not surprised by the verdict and stated the website will still be up and running. If you haven't yet made the jump to firefox, GO DOWNLOAD IT! Try it for a week, and you'll be converted. The install file is only 7.1 megabytes. It has an extremely small system footprint, which uses much less RAM than IE. By comparison, Internet Explorer 8 is around a 60 MB download. One of my favorite features of Firefox is the ability to add plugins (small addons which perform specific functions like viewing special graphic formats or playing multimedia files). Here is a quick list of some of plugins I find most useful. Greasemonkey - "Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript." This addon really deserves its own category. With Greasemonkey you add your whatever funcionality you want through scripts downloaded from their site. You can change the way Gmail looks, remove ads from Facebook and Youtube, or you can download apple movie trailers with a link placed next to the movie.
