Review of The New Nano.

S7300765I picked up a new ipod nano today and have been playing with it for a couple hours now and decided to do a little review on it. The size is exactly the same, the screen is a little bigger, and the track pad is smaller. The video camera is of course the biggest new feature of it, I took a few sample videos and will put them into the post as soon as they are loaded onto youtube. The video quality is pretty good, I was very impressed with it for what the device is. It is much better than the 3G recording, and is pretty comparable to the 3G S. Other notable features are the ability to record sound notes and play music without headphones through the external speaker. The FM radio that is built in works very well and picks up great reception. Other than that i’ll just let the pictures and the videos do the rest of the talking.

Surprisingly I dont have a good camera so some of these pictures did not turn out very well.  One of my only complaints right now about it is the camera placement, you have to hold the ipod  by the screen or else your hand will block the lens, and it gets a little awkward because I want to naturally hold it right were the camera is, that might just be me though?  THis things is really thin, not that its bad I’m just not use to that, I have either owned an ipod classic or the touch so this is new to me and the small size kind of frustrates me a little. Other than that every thing is a ok, and it is really a great piece of machinery, its built really solid, feels good in your hand, the screen has a wonderful resolution even better than the iphone screen pictures show up much clearer. The paint job on these are also better, the 4th gen. would scratch easily but they put some kind of gloss coat to keep it from scratching. If your on the fence about getting one I hope this helps you decide what you want, let me know if you have any questions.

A couple things to note – The video quality when uploaded to youtube did diminish a little bit. I tried watching the videos full screen on my macbook pro and they looked fine, decent enough that they would be watchable if you wanted to make a home movie of something, youtube does not give it as much justice. Another thing I forgot to mention is that the trackpad is small on the new nanos, so if you though the last ones were too small then you will not like these, but they had to shrink them down to make that screen bigger and it was worth it, those screens are awesome!
It took me a while to figure out how to do the effects on the video recording, if you have one and are stumped while in the video camera hold down the center button for about 4 seconds then it will pop up the display showing all the effects then just choose and click one.

Another thing to note is the pedometer, it was always off by about 5 steps, but they claim if its used with a nike+ipod adapter then it will help make it more accurate. Ill try it when running tomorrow.

Sorry you may see a few more of these as I find things out or think of them. The FM radio only works when you have headphones plugged in. You can play movies or listen to music without headphones it plays through the internal speaker much like the 2nd gen ipod touch. They don’t sound they greatest but it works for what it is.
